Do you know that Beta-Carotene supplements Increases Risk of Cancer?
This is a study conducted to investigate the effect of beta-carotene supplementation (in isolated form) on cancer risk.
The following are the main conclusions:
"Beta-carotene supplementation has not been shown to have any beneficial effect on cancer prevention.
"Conversely, it was associated with increased risk of not only lung cancer but also of gastric cancer"
"Nutritional prevention of cancer through beta-carotene supplementation should not be recommended."
Why would a nutrient become a poison when it is in an isolated form?
When beta-carotene is found in our wholesome fruits and vegetables, there are other nutrients there as well that work hand-in-hand with beta carotene to give a good and healthy outcome for our body!
It is critical that we go back to basics and opt for wholesome plant superfoods for our important nutrients!
Cheers!

Why is Wholesome the Wiser Choice for us?
Singapore is an extremely fast-paced society, with many families having both parents working to bring in an income to support the lifestyle in this country. With that, how many are able to slow down and take a closer look at what they are consuming daily?
Due to the rush here and there, people commonly opt for synthetic or natural extract type supplements to make up for the nutrients they believe they are not getting from their daily food intake. As such, the growth in the supplement market has been steady and on an upwards trend.
Let's pause here and ponder over it. Does taking synthetic or natural extract type supplements help with our overall health? If so, why are there more and more hospitals in Singapore, yet still having insufficient bed spaces?
1) Difference between Wholesome foods vs Synthetic or Natural Extract
The buzz word in the market is natural. However, do you know that "natural" may not necessarily mean that you get the nutrients in the exact form and package nature intended for you to consume it?
Synthetic is simpler to understand. This basically means that it is made in the laboratory. Hence, not natural at all.
Let's look at a simple example to understand the above terms. I'm sure everyone is familiar with vitamin C, right?
One common natural source of vitamin C is from oranges. However, our vitamin C pills are typically like the tablets we see on the right of the arrow. How did it go from within an orange into tablet form?
It has to undergo some chemical separation processes. So let me simplify by likening an orange to car. When an orange goes through this process, it is similar to a car going through a big machine that can only recognise tyres and removes them. At the end of the day, we are only left with tyres, the rest are disposed.
Now, would you want to have the whole car, or just the tyre?
For me personally the choice is clear. I'd take the car, the tyre is useless to me as a transportation tool.
2) Safety in Wholesome foods vs Synthetic or Natural Extract
If only taking synthetic or natural extracts would be as harmless as just being useless. There are instances when they pose a danger to our health too.

Hence, it is important for us to be wiser consumers so that we can safeguard our health and the health of our loved ones.

Genetic vs Nutrition -- which gets the upper hand in deciding our health?
Our genetic make up: this is something that for the large part we are not able to change. What we have control over, is the food that we put into our mouths. Between the two, which do you think has a bigger effect on our health?
A study was recently published to provide some insights. It is found that children often take after their caregivers' unhealthy eating habits and subsequently would also be plagued with similar health issues / diseases their caregivers faced.
From here, my conclusion is that We are What we Eat! :)
What are your thoughts about it? Do leave your comments below!

Vegecolour - the Goodness of 28 Vegetables in a Convenient Form!
How can we get the nutrients from all these vegetables in a convenient form daily? This means no need to soak, clean, wash and cut them at all!
They can be found in vegecolour. All the vegetables are freeze dried, powdered down and packed in a convenient sachet for us to bring around. This is so that we can have the convenience from anywhere!
Vegecolour in my Fish Soup! |
This is me enjoying my fish soup noodle with 28 different types of vegetables in it!
In the food courts in Singapore these days, when we request to add 1 type of vegetable it is already $0.80 !!!
With vegecolour, I can enjoy 28 types of vegetables, and it is not more than $2. Share that with a loved one and it is definitely more value for money than opting to add vegetables at a food court stall!
With the rising costs globally, we need to be looking out for the best value for our dollar to ensure we maximize it. As Warren Buffet always says, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get". It is not necessarily the cheapest things that always give the best value.
Email or whatsapp me to find out more. :)

Why is Eating more Types of Fruits and Vegetables Good for Health?
The different colours of fruits and vegetables represent different phytochemicals present in the plant foods itself.
Phytochemicals are the nutrients found in plant foods that give it its unique colours or organoleptic flavours. Besides tingling our senses, they work together in harmony to nourish our immune system in various ways. The above screen shots just show a few examples. :)
A review of around 200 studies that looked at the relationship between fruits and vegetable intake and various cancers was conducted by Dr. Gladys Block from University of California, Berkeley. Cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix,
esophagus, oral cavity, stomach, bladder, pancreas, and ovary were
reviewed.
In this review, they discovered that,
For most cancer sites, persons with low fruit and vegetable intake (at least the lower one-fourth of the population) experience about twice the risk of cancer compared with those with high intake, even after control for potentially confounding factors.
However, phytochemicals need to be consumed in the form of wholesome fruits and vegetables, rather than phytochemicals purified and made into dietary supplement. Pertaining to this, this article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proposes their view as follows:
We believe that the evidence suggests that antioxidants are best acquired through whole-food consumption, not as a pill or an extract.
How can get the goodness of a variety wholesome fruits and vegetables but yet without the hassle of having to wash, clean, cut them? Stay tuned to my next post for more information!
Cheers!
