Do you know that Calcium Pills increases Heart Attack risk by 30%?

Calcium is extremely essential in many of our body functions. In fact, approximately 1.5 - 2% of our body weight is accounted for by calcium. Calcium is required mostly for strong bone formation and prevention of osteoporosis.

In fact, due to the hectic lifestyle, people turn to calcium pills to fill the gap in their day to day diet. Are these safe?

This article published in the Straits Times talks about the risk of taking calcium pills.
"When you take calcium supplements, your blood calcium level...goes up to the top end of the normal range"

"That doesn't happen when you eat calcium in your diet because the calcium from food is very slowly absorbed and so the blood calcium level hardly changes at all"

"Higher blood calcium level may lead to the formatin of plague, or fatty deposits, in blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases."
It is clear that we all need calcium. The only important choice we need to make is the source of where we are getting it from. Choose wholesome.

Here are some calcium-rich wholesome plant superfoods!

Do you know that Beta-Carotene supplements Increases Risk of Cancer?

Beta-carotene is a nutrient found in orange or red vegetables such as carrots. It is a good antioxidant and brings benefits to our body if taken in wholesome form of fruits and vegetables.

This is a study conducted to investigate the effect of beta-carotene supplementation (in isolated form) on cancer risk.

The following are the main conclusions:

"Beta-carotene supplementation has not been shown to have any beneficial effect on cancer prevention.
"Conversely, it was associated with increased risk of not only lung cancer but also of gastric cancer"
"Nutritional prevention of cancer through beta-carotene supplementation should not be recommended."

Why would a nutrient become a poison when it is in an isolated form?

When beta-carotene is found in our wholesome fruits and vegetables, there are other nutrients there as well that work hand-in-hand with beta carotene to give a good and healthy outcome for our body!

It is critical that we go back to basics and opt for wholesome plant superfoods for our important nutrients!

Why is Wholesome the Wiser Choice for us?

Singapore is an extremely fast-paced society, with many families having both parents working to bring in an income to support the lifestyle in this country. With that, how many are able to slow down and take a closer look at what they are consuming daily?

Due to the rush here and there, people commonly opt for synthetic or natural extract type supplements to make up for the nutrients they believe they are not getting from their daily food intake. As such, the growth in the supplement market has been steady and on an upwards trend.

Let's pause here and ponder over it. Does taking synthetic or natural extract type supplements help with our overall health? If so, why are there more and more hospitals in Singapore, yet still having insufficient bed spaces?

1) Difference between Wholesome foods vs Synthetic or Natural Extract

The buzz word in the market is natural. However, do you know that "natural" may not necessarily mean that you get the nutrients in the exact form and package nature intended for you to consume it?

Synthetic is simpler to understand. This basically means that it is made in the laboratory. Hence, not natural at all.

Let's look at a simple example to understand the above terms. I'm sure everyone is familiar with vitamin C, right?

One common natural source of vitamin C is from oranges. However, our vitamin C pills are typically like the tablets we see on the right of the arrow. How did it go from within an orange into tablet form?

It has to undergo some chemical separation processes. So let me simplify by likening an orange to car. When an orange goes through this process, it is similar to a car going through a big machine that can only recognise tyres and removes them. At the end of the day, we are only left with tyres, the rest are disposed.

Now, would you want to have the whole car, or just the tyre?

For me personally the choice is clear. I'd take the car, the tyre is useless to me as a transportation tool.

2) Safety in Wholesome foods vs Synthetic or Natural Extract

If only taking synthetic or natural extracts would be as harmless as just being useless. There are instances when they pose a danger to our health too.

Hence, it is important for us to be wiser consumers so that we can safeguard our health and the health of our loved ones.

Genetic vs Nutrition -- which gets the upper hand in deciding our health?

Our genetic make up: this is something that for the large part we are not able to change. What we have control over, is the food that we put into our mouths. Between the two, which do you think has a bigger effect on our health?

A study was recently published to provide some insights. It is found that children often take after their caregivers' unhealthy eating habits and subsequently would also be plagued with similar health issues / diseases their caregivers faced.

From here, my conclusion is that We are What we Eat! :)

What are your thoughts about it? Do leave your comments below!

Vegecolour - the Goodness of 28 Vegetables in a Convenient Form!

How can we get the nutrients from all these vegetables in a convenient form daily? This means no need to soak, clean, wash and cut them at all!

They can be found in vegecolour. All the vegetables are freeze dried, powdered down and packed in a convenient sachet for us to bring around. This is so that we can have the convenience from anywhere!

Vegecolour in my Fish Soup!

This is me enjoying my fish soup noodle with 28 different types of vegetables in it!

In the food courts in Singapore these days, when we request to add 1 type of vegetable it is already $0.80 !!!

With vegecolour, I can enjoy 28 types of vegetables, and it is not more than $2. Share that with a loved one and it is definitely more value for money than opting to add vegetables at a food court stall!

With the rising costs globally, we need to be looking out for the best value for our dollar to ensure we maximize it. As Warren Buffet always says, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get". It is not necessarily the cheapest things that always give the best value.

Why is Eating more Types of Fruits and Vegetables Good for Health?

The different colours of fruits and vegetables represent different phytochemicals present in the plant foods itself.

Phytochemicals are the nutrients found in plant foods that give it its unique colours or organoleptic flavours. Besides tingling our senses, they work together in harmony to nourish our immune system in various ways. The above screen shots just show a few examples. :)

A review of around 200 studies that looked at the relationship between fruits and vegetable intake and various cancers was conducted by Dr. Gladys Block from University of California, Berkeley. Cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix, esophagus, oral cavity, stomach, bladder, pancreas, and ovary were reviewed.

In this review, they discovered that,
For most cancer sites, persons with low fruit and vegetable intake (at least the lower one-fourth of the population) experience about twice the risk of cancer compared with those with high intake, even after control for potentially confounding factors.

However, phytochemicals need to be consumed in the form of wholesome fruits and vegetables, rather than phytochemicals purified and made into dietary supplement. Pertaining to this, this article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proposes their view as follows:
We believe that the evidence suggests that antioxidants are best acquired through whole-food consumption, not as a pill or an extract.

How can get the goodness of a variety wholesome fruits and vegetables but yet without the hassle of having to wash, clean, cut them? Stay tuned to my next post for more information!

"No Sugar-coating the Threat of Diabetes"

This article was featured recently on 1st March 2016 in The Straits Times (Singapore's local newspaper). It emphasizes the importance of living healthy lifestyle to prevent the occurrence of diabetes.

"Unfortunately, obesity trends here are heightening that risk for Singaporeans. Among schoolchildren, obesity has risen from 10 per cent in 2000 to 12 per cent in 2014, and more adults aged 24 to 35 are becoming obese as their lifestyles change when they enter the workforce."

"Alarmingly, a projection by the dean of the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health suggests that a third of this cohort might become diabetic by the time they are 65."

I am currently belonging to this category of ages between 24 to 35. Knowing that by statistics, 1 in 3 of the folks I know around my age group will become diabetic is a very alarming news. Worst still, will I be the part of the third that becomes diabetic?

My dear friends, isn't it very important that we safeguard our health by a healthy lifestyle to prevent diseases as such? Prevention is better than Cure, isn't it?

"In many cases, the onset of diabetes and its complications "can be prevented by a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco", says WHO"

By keeping our immune system healthy, we can prevent many health issues that plagues our society today. Find out what is the best lifestyle for our immune system health here!

What is the Best Lifestyle for our Immune System?

Our Immune System is our Best Doctor! It is vigilantly on duty all 52 weeks per year, 7 days per week, 24 hours per day.As and when we encounter any foreign invader, be it bacteria, viruses or even a speck of dust, our immune system will spring into action and start its work.

A well-balanced immune system will immediately know where to go, what to attack and when to stop. Isn't it a great amazing gift to us from God?

How are we supporting our immune system today to ensure that it is always well-balanced?

There are four aspects to it...

1) Nutrition

The food we eat has a direct impact on our immune system. Nutritional immunology is the study of the direct link between nutrition and our immune system. You can read more in this post.

2) Sufficient Sleep

Do you know that when you are sleeping, your immune system is hard at work. It is busy carrying out the tasks of repairing and detoxification. As such, you may find that when you do not have enough rest, you can see the effect on your skin, it looks more "tired", because it doesn't repair that well.

From a more scientific standpoint, this is because "Prolonged sleep curtailment and the accompanying stress response invoke a persistent unspecific production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, best described as chronic low-grade inflammation, and also produce immunodeficiency, which both have detrimental effects on health." (NCBI, NLM, NIH, 2012)

3) Relax, Unwind and be Positive :)

Stress has many faces in today's busy society. It could be from relationship issues, from financial related problems or even work related complications. According to the American Psychological Association, stress weakens the immune system.

As such, it is important for us to relax and unwind. At the same time, a positive mindset will give a boost to our immune system according to a University of Queensland study. There are many ways we can keep up with a positive attitude in life. To begin with, we can count our blessings each day!

4) Exercise

Physical activity need not be overly intense to be able to help in our immune system functions. As recommended by US CDC, moderate physical activity such as daily walks. As long as our heart rate increases and we break a perspiration it means our body has worked enough. Just need to keep up with that for about 5 hours each week.

When we exercise, it helps to circulate our lymphatic system. Our lymph nodes are part of our immune system. It helps to filter fluids that are forced out of our bloodstream during regular circulation. Bacteria, abnormal cells and other matter are filtered off before the fluid is returned to the bloodstream via the lymph vessels.

Our immune cells can then head directly for the lymph nodes where they can get rid of bacteria or other pathogens without having to hunt for it all around our body.

Having all four components in our life: Nutrition, Sleep, Relax and being Positive, Exercise -- This is also known as the Nutritional Immunology Lifestyle. With this, we can have a robust immunity, leading to longevity.

How did my 7 month-old son recover from Eczema? - with the help of Oxyginberry!!

Eczema seems to be very common these days among children. During the days when I attended school, I would always feel sad for any classmates who had eczema since it really looked uncomfortable.

As neither I nor my hubby had a history of eczema, naturally I expected my son to be eczema-free. Never did it expect to have to face the reality of the discomfort on my son when it hit. =(

What a heartache! :(..

This what how it looked like on 4th June 2015 when I first had the opportunity to snap a picture.

I had brought him to the paediatric specialist 1 month ago, and he was prescribed a steroid cream and I was advised to change his bath wash and apply lotion for him. The specialist mentioned that if his condition didn't improve, I would need to bring him back for a prescription of a stronger steroid cream.

I was apprehensive about the steroid cream and indeed, my baby's skin looked even more translucent after just 2-3 days of thin application. It looked like any light scratch would create an open wound. Hence, I stopped applying the cream after 3 days.

At this point on 4th June, I decided that I would give nutritional immunology a shot at helping my son recover from this skin condition.

Nutritional Immunology returned my son his healthy skin!

Around 3 weeks later on 21st June, I took another picture of his condition and it was indeed much better to my delight! Although not all the rash had disappeared, it had cleared up at least 90%!!

So what actions did I take with the knowledge from nutritional immunology?

1) Every morning, I would feed my son Oxyginberry mixed into his Nutrifresh. With the additional antioxidants and phytochemicals, his immune system would get nourished and the overactivity would be calmed down.

2) I would apply for him the Elemente Baby Lotion. Infused with oxyginberry complex, the antioxidants and phytochemicals can be delivered directly to his skin.

Also, it had such a great smell and was not sticky at all after application. He liked it so much that he would crawl over for me to apply the lotion on him!

My son has fully recovered in just 2 months. This video was taken on 29th July with no sign of eczema at all.  It is heart warming to see him well and able to enjoy himself again. I am thankful for the science of nutritional immunology that has helped my son to recover.
