Where can we find Omega-3 from Plant Foods?

As we had explored in the earlier post, omega-3 is best obtained from wholesome plant foods. Less known are the sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is what we will be looking at.

CHIA SEEDS!

A GREAT SOURCE OF NUTRITION
Contains calcium, phosphorus, manganese, fibre and protein. Also contains antioxidants in the form of flavonol glycosides, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, kaempferol, quertin and myricetin -- to fight free radicals and keep our cells young!

A VERY POWERFUL DOSE OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
Just one serving of chia seeds contains 4,915 mg of Omega-3 fatty acids and 1,620 mg of Omega-6 fatty acids. In the beautiful ratio of 3:1 of Omega-3 vs Omega-6 fatty acids!

HELPS WITH DIGESTION
Rich in fibre which help to cleanse and soothe the colon. Chia seed enzymes aids in digestion.

ENHANCES CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Chia seed diets can dramatically decrease triglyceride levels and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol. Regular consumption can reduce blood pressure and inflammation.

ANTI-CANCER
Inhibits cancer growth and spread by increasing the infiltration abilities of T-cells (a type of immune cells) and suppressing cancer cell reproduction

KIWI FRUIT SEEDS!

VERY RICH IN OMEGA-3
Kiwi fruit seeds oil contain 62% ALA, much higher than other sources of ALA.

PROMOTES GOOD HEART HEALTH
Contains essential fatty acids for making prostaglandins which regulate heart rate, blood pressure and blood clotting. Omega-3 fatty acids helps in reducing arrhythmias, or abnormal heartbeat.

UPKEEPS BRAIN HEALTH
ALA deficiency will affect brain cell membranes which translates to impact on the nervous system. (i.e. decreased learning and memory, decreased perception of pleasure).

WHAT IS THE MOST CONVENIENT WAY TO GET MORE OMEGA-3 FROM WHOLESOME PLANT FOOD?

Formulated according to the principles of Nutritional Immunology, with highest quality ensured by selecting the right species, perfect harvesting time, best processing method.

O-SEED (freeze-dried kiwi fruit seeds and chia seeds) comes with its safety guarantee and provides Omega-3 from wholesome plant food.

O-seed is what I opt to use to nourish my 1 year old boy with more Omega-3 for his brain development. =)

Is Omega-3 in the form of Fish Oil good for us?

Omega-3 is an important type of fatty acid which is lacking in our modern diets today. Nevertheless, as an integral part of our human cell membranes, it is needed for many basic functions in our body.

There are 3 types of Omega-3 fatty acids:
  1. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
  2. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  3. alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

SAFETY OF USE OF FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS

Fish oil supplements, containing DHA and EPA, are typically sourced from the skin and liver of fish. Have we stopped to think about what the functions of the skin and liver are? Skin is an organ which protects the fish and has direct contact with the external environment. The liver is the primary organ of the toxins handling system of any organism's body. In this light, what do you think is the likelihood that toxins can be found in fish oil? Is it safe for our consumption?

Cancer centers across the US has conducted a study and found Omega-3 fatty acids from fish source linked to a higher risk of protate cancer.

ALTERNATIVE OMEGA-3 SOURCES

Fish oil supplements are usually recommended for its DHA, which is believed to aid in brain development, and EPA, which is for cardiovascular health. However, do you know that our human body can manufacture its own DHA and EPA? All we need to give out body, is Omega-3 in the form of ALA, which can be found in plant foods.

Just think about this for a moment:
For growing children, isn't it that they need more DHA for brain development?
For the elderly, isn't it that they need more EPA for cardiovascular health?
Do we know if the fish oil converted in the fish body will contain more DHA or EPA?

The best solution would then be for us to consume ALA from plant foods, and allow our body to do the conversion on its own!

Stay tuned to my next post to find out more about ALA-rich plant foods!

Is Cow’s Milk Really Good for You?

Cow’s milk, it is something that we have grown up drinking without a second thought. Continuous education by advertisements emphasize the importance of drinking milk for strong bones. It has also formed the basis of many items in our food culture today – yoghurt, cheese, ice cream…and the list goes on. With the increasing occurrence of diseases around us today, have we ever taken a step back and ask ourselves – Is cow’s milk really good for us?

1) MILK CORRELATES WITH HIGHER OCCURRENCE OF DEATH AND FRACTURES

Despite the high calcium content in milk, there is very little evidence to show that it helps in building strong bones. In fact, it has shown a strong correlation to increasing occurrences of osteoporosis. This is mentioned in a study conducted in Sweden, featured in the British Medical Journal. In this study, it is reported that men who drank 3 or more glasses a day of milk had a higher risk of death mostly due to cardiovascular issues compared to those who drank less than 1 glass a day. For women, those who drank 3 or more glasses a day had a higher risk of fractures and death.

2) MILK CAUSES PREMATURE AGING, INCREASE RISK OF CANCERS

In this study, the researchers also found milk intake to result in oxidative stress, which is linked to cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Milk contains D-galactose, which causes inflammation in the body and induces premature aging. As such, high intakes of milk may also risk of other cancers such as ovarian cancer and prostate cancers

3) MILK CAUSES CALCIUM LOSS FROM OUR BONES

Milk is also high in animal protein. Animal protein has a very high level of sulfur-containing amino acids which causes the kidneys to excrete more calcium, which in turn has to be leeched out from our bones. Hence, eating animal protein is more likely to cause loss of calcium from our bones compared to plant protein.

ARE THERE BETTER OPTIONS FOR US?

  1. Aromantic Powder – for a healthier source of calcium and amino acids.
  2. Nutrifresh – for a healthier source of protein for growing children, with basic vitamins and minerals from 15 types of fruits and vegetables.
Read more about them by clicking on their respective links. =)

Prevention is Better (and Cheaper!) than Cure

It is such an overused cliché that most people would agree with prevention without a second thought. However, let’s all take a second to ponder over the significance of this statement. Let the meaning of each word settle slowly into your consciousness and come to a whole new level of comprehension.

Prevention. It is defined as the act of hindering or stopping something bad from happening. In light of this statement, let’s look at it in the context of owning a car.

red_ferrari_f50_515655

In Singapore, cars are known to be expensive, extremely. An average Ferrari model costs in the range of $1 Mil SGD today. Assuming that you now own a Ferrari. Congrats to you proud new owners of this glistening brand new luxury sports car! When you head to the pump station, wouldn’t you give it a treatment befitting of its status – the best fuel available, the equivalent of Platinum 98 at Caltex, Synergy Supreme+ 8000 at Esso, or the likes of LEVO 98 at SPC? When your Ferrari has run up its mileage, wouldn’t you send it for regular servicing to ensure that all internal parts, especially the engine, is running in tip top condition? Would you wait until the weather has corroded the paintwork before you do a waxing for it?

Today, this Ferrari can only last us 10 years in Singapore. Every one of us indeed own a Ferrari, or rather, an even better version of it – our human body. Our body can last us as long as 80 years or more if we take good care of it. It can do many things and its “technology” is even way more advanced than a Ferrari. Do you agree then, that our body is definitely worth more than a Ferrari?

Are we then nourishing our body with the best fuels or most nourishing foods each day so that it can run smoothly? Do we ensure that our foods are contamination free, otherwise it could cause a whole host of chronic issues? Do we regularly send it for an overhaul to ensure that all the internal parts are working in tip top condition? Do we take note of what we use on our exterior – make up, bath essentials, skincare to ensure they are safe for our use?

There is one distinct difference between a car and our body, however. For a car, when the internal parts breakdown, just pay the money to do the replacement and it’s as good as new. For our human body, can we say the same applies?

Taking the example of a heart transplant. It costs approximately $1 Mil USD for a transplant in the US. After we get an insurance pay out to cover the operation and transplant costs, what other issues do we face? We will need to recover from the operation. In the recovery phase, we are dependent on others’ for even the most basic needs – eating and going to the loo. Imagine that loss in mobility and freedom. Our family members will need to take turns to look after us during this recovery phase. Busy as they are, they will need to squeeze out time from their already hectic lives. They become more stressed. We become a burden to others. Do we even want this to happen?

We have a choice today. All we need to do is to search out the right knowledge in maintaining our body to be a wiser consumer. Keep the long term in view in our everyday choices of food and household items. Do stay tuned as we continue to share on some common misconceptions in the upcoming posts and on other titbits of knowledge for you to be able to lead a healthy long life.

Wishing everyone best of health and dream come true!

Cheers!

Why is Health Important? – looking at Health as an Asset

Dear reader, as you go about your everyday busy lives, do you ever stop to think of what allows you to continue at this pace everyday? How about the numerous pollutants, radiation and allergens that you come into contact with that seems to have no effect at all on you?

Amidst all the hazards we are faced with everyday, it is our health which allows us to proceed on with life. Of course, the occasional flu is there to remind us to keep ourselves in tip-top shape, but how many of us do really put an emphasis in this aspect?

The statistics are alarming, based on the latest report from the American Cancer Society, the lifetime probability of developing cancer for Men is at 1 in 2, while that of Women is 1 in 3. Besides cancer, there are also many other illnesses happening in the people around us. Once upon a time unheard but now getting more common are diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, osteoarthiritis, eczema, psoriasis, hyper and hypo-thyroidism, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s disease and the list goes on.

Our health is our asset. Taking Robert Kiyosaki’s definition of an asset – it is something you acquire that puts money into your pocket. Just imagine, even if we have all the knowledge in the world, once our memory gets eroded by a disease like Parkinson’s, isn’t it all in vain? Once we can secure our health, we will then be able to generate income – which also means money gets put into your pocket.

Let’s liken our health to a bank account. Every day, we withdraw health currency in the form of energy and vitality. In turn, this energy and vitality is converted to the money we earn day to day. This money is then used to pay for our house, our car, our investments. As time passes, our health bank account starts to deplete. If we withdraw faster (ie. By working long hours, exposing to more allergens, eating recklessly), our account will also deplete faster. As such, wouldn’t it be wise to invest some money back into our health bank account, into maintaining our body (better than a Lamborghini!). This will then allow us to continue to earn money. It will also allow us to have the vitality to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

I hope this article has given you another perspective towards our health. It is of extreme importance that we safeguard our health as it is not something that money can purchase back. Prevention is better, and most times cheaper, than cure. We do not need to wait until something happens before we take action.

Finally, I would wish everyone great health and dreams come true!

Cheers!
